I would have been about 6 or 7 when the film came out so if I have seen it I don't remember it; but by all accounts Bartlett sticks to it pretty closely. So really I think my problems are with Welland's story, and the way he chose to adapt reality into fiction just isn't dramatically satisfying to me.

Plus, the secularist in me is increasingly annoyed at a "triumphant" ending that sees the Christian praised for getting his medal without having to compromise - without mentioning that this only happened because everyone else, including the audience who don't get to see the rematch with Abrahams that the whole play has been building up to, does have to compromise.nick730https://www.blogger.com/profile/17790671846484940609noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8781475196023418414.post-45197600933670286982012-05-19T23:27:58.280+01:002012-05-19T23:27:58.280+01:00I disagree about the running track being the main ...I disagree about the running track being the main focus. It seemed one of the weaker points, especially as they over-used it with so much running to and fro seeming a bit repetitive.
What I really liked (and it's one of Edward Hall's trademarks) is the slick transitions between scenes. The one where they merge from a Gilbert & Sullivan song about being an 'Englishman' to the Highlands of Scotland is particularly good.
Quite a few times I found moments incredibly moving...it might have been the Vangelis...but I'm a sucker for the music.
Anyway I really liked it, and would go and see it again. I guess with so much depressing theatre around, it's actually rare to find something genuinely uplifting. Go and see it!Poimandres Productionshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09459019626003655715noreply@blogger.com
