If this was a more surrealist piece it wouldn't need that sort of context, but it's not and it does.

Personally I'm looking forward to seeing what Ian's got to say. People had only lived in Skagway for about one year before the gold industry bottomed out. I guessed the trio were probably somewhere else beforehand and had come there for a quick buck, but who knows? The thing, though, is that T-Belle's "prospecting" skills seem pretty f**king improbable under any circumstances and the play desperately needs to explain how she got them. I just completely dismissed it as "something the author made up" because from what I read the only women prospectors were miner's wives. It would have been much more interesting than listening to May monologue about Frankie's acting career, that's for sure.

By the way, nice review, Nick. Makes me feel like I pulled my punches. Now maybe the people who are so angry at me for saying three women in a cabin does not a play make will get off of my ass and get on yours!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8781475196023418414.post-81092845116088687742014-02-12T12:54:02.408+00:002014-02-12T12:54:02.408+00:00People in general, no.
Three Victorian women, two...People in general, no.

Three Victorian women, two of them getting on in age, one of whom's already had at least one prior stroke that we're told of, whose only previous work experience was in the entertainment industry, competing with more experienced prospectors for the dregs in a place so inhospitable people freeze solid if left outside too long. Yeah, I'd have liked a bit more explanation for why they got that desperate; or at least some acknowledgement that they got caught up in a moment of mass madness and made a mistake.nick730https://www.blogger.com/profile/17790671846484940609noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8781475196023418414.post-33697136335975799372014-02-12T12:19:12.881+00:002014-02-12T12:19:12.881+00:00"For reasons unknown to god or man, the trio ..."For reasons unknown to god or man, the trio wound up in Skagway, Alaska"

Does it need to be explained why people are present in a gold rush town, during a gold rush?

http://www.discovery.com/tv-shows/gold-rush/photos/klondike-gold-rush-pictures.htmMarcusnoreply@blogger.com
