Theatre review: Blood of my Blood

A reckoning with the legacy of slavery with supernatural overtones, Joy Nesbit's Blood of my Blood is the penultimate Upstairs show of the Royal Court's 70th Anniversary season, Natalie Pryce's design turning the attic space into a South Carolina plantation. These historical sites have come under a lot of scrutiny in recent years for being turned into, to all intents and purposes, Antebellum cosplay theme parks, but this one's conversion to an Airbnb and wedding venue is... marginally less offensive? Talulah (Jodie Campbell) is a black British woman whose grandfather moved to the UK from the States; after his death, and with no other living relatives, she follows a family tree to the plantation where her ancestors were once enslaved and, instead of staying at the big house, has asked to stay at the former slave quarters where Ginnie (Ronkẹ Adékọluẹ́jọ) once lived.
