Theatre review: A Little Life
I think it's the first 2023 show to self-identify as "the theatrical event of the year" - certainly A Little Life has become a hot topic, whether because of selling out so conclusively it's already added a second West End run, or the discussion of whether it represents the apex of misery porn, or just because people like celebrity cock (something this blog has never had any strong opinions about, obviously.) Then there's the fact that it's had a decidedly marmite response from the critics - my personal experience with Ivo van Hove has been very love/hate as well so this really could have gone any number of ways. van Hove and Koen Tachelet adapt Hanya Yanagihara's 2015 novel about Jude (James Norton,) one of a quartet of university friends who stay close throughout their lives. He's well-liked but it's openly acknowledged among his friendship group that he's so private they don't know the most basic things about him.

Theatre review: Belleville
Paris Syndrome is a temporary mental illness that affects visitors to the French capital, possibly caused by a place so romanticised in popular culture turning out to be just as real and down-to-earth as anywhere else. It primarily affects Japanese tourists because the “city of love” image is particularly strongly endorsed in Japan so the disappointment is greater, but presumably Americans are also susceptible to this: It would explain why it becomes the obvious setting for Amy Herzog’s Belleville, a play that takes place entirely in an American couple’s apartment. Zack (James Norton) and Abby (Imogen Poots) got married pretty young, most likely too young as Abby wanted her terminally ill mother to make it to her wedding. Since her mother’s death she’s suffered from anxiety and depression, but is now attempting to come off her medication.

Theatre review: Bug
If temporary theatre Found 111 have a USP (other than always seeming to leave some
sort of booby-trap for the audience to trip over when they cross the tiny stage -
last time it was books, this time it's dirty dishes,) it seems to be casting actors
who've long been known to theatregoers, but have in recent years got a whole new
audience from high-profile TV work. So after Andrew Scott in The Dazzle, another
guaranteed sell-out as James Norton returns to the stage for Tracy Letts'
Bug. He joins Kate Fleetwood who plays Agnes, a crack addict whose young son
disappeared several years ago, and now lives in an Oklahoma motel room. She's more
jittery than usual today as she's heard her abusive ex-husband Jerry (Alec Newman)
has been released from prison early, and she expects him to turn up any minute. But
first her friend (Daisy Lewis) brings another addict round to share her crack pipe.
